The Anthropological and Archaeological Database of Sepultures

The Anthropological and Archaeological Database of Sepultures

THANADOS (The Anthropological and Archaeological Database of Sepultures) deals with the digital collection and presentation of Early Medieval cemeteries in the area of present day Austria. Within THANADOS hitherto published information on Early Medieval burials was digitized and translated to English language. The data are mapped using the CIDOC CRM and provided online. The information can be explored via a digital catalogue and within an interactive map. Cartographic visualisations as well as charts and plots are created dynamically based on real archaeological research data. It aims at providing a best practice way on how to disseminate archaeological sources and research in the 21st century against the background of digital humanities. It is closely connected to the OpenAtlas project and entirely build upon open source technology. It started in June 2019 and is funded by the go!digital NextGeneration programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (GDND 2018 039). Since the end of the project in 2021 THANADOS provides an online repository of all hitherto published Early Medieval cemeteries from the area of present day Austria. The project is actively carried on within further cooperations and new sites are added continuously The application is entirely open source and the code is available via GitHub under the MIT licence

Über das Projekt / About the Project

THANADOS (The Anthropological and Archaeological Database of Sepultures) deals with the digital collection and presentation of cemeteries investigated by means of archaeology, anthropology and related disciplines. Within THANADOS, information on burials is digitised according to FAIR principles and presented in English. The data are mapped using the CIDOC CRM and provided online. Users can explore the information via a digital catalogue and an interactive map. Cartographic visualisations as well as charts and plots are created dynamically based on research data.

The project aims at providing a best-practice method for disseminating archaeological sources and research in the 21st century under the umbrella of digital humanities. THANADOS is based on the OpenAtlas system and is entirely built upon open-source technology. The project began in 2019 under the funding programme go!digital NextGeneration of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (GDND 2018-039). Since 2022, THANADOS is coordinated and hosted by the Natural History Museum Vienna. Through international cooperation, the system is continuously developed and new data are added.

THANADOS provides an online repository of all hitherto published Early Medieval cemeteries from present-day Austria (period ca. 600–1100 AD). The system is open to cooperation and can host datasets from any period. THANADOS does not claim completeness — instead, it offers a platform for thematic datasets that contributors wish to provide as Open Data in a standardised form. Data providers receive support in processing and integrating their data on a regional basis; the platform also offers aggregation into portals such as ARIADNEplus.
